Pavement Condition Rating & Barrier Warrant Analysis

  • Client: Chicago Dept. of Transportation (CDOT)
  • Prime Consultant: WSP

About this Project

To support our partner WSP, we lead two main tasks for integrating the City of Chicago’s road pavement condition results and appurtenances into separate databases and augmenting existing data with information from field surveys. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) recommends that all installed roadside barriers and safety appurtenances are analyzed to rate and document their condition. Urban GIS assisted with utilizing LIDAR to measure and audit roadway safety barriers that are under the purview of CDOT. We performed barrier warrant analysis on roadside guardrails to report safety, damage and compliance with IDOT roadway construction standards. We also identified and audited roadway crash bollards within the City of Chicago for the safety of traffic and for pedestrians.

Regarding road pavement management, we enhanced and maintained a constantly changing database containing an extensive list of attributes including, but not limited to, Condition Rating Survey (CRS) values and other distress descriptors. With this data, we provided exhibits for the visualization of different scenarios utilized for forecasting pavement performance, determining long-term funding requirements, selecting optimized treatment applications and contributing to needs assessment for annual programs.

For both tasks, we shared ArcGIS Online web maps and published feature layers which allowed the entire team to collaborate, analyze and update the data from anywhere. These online tools resulted in an effective approach to managing the asset inventory and served to generate a bollards report containing over 7000 pages.
