Residential Service Line Update
- Client: New Jersey American Water
- Prime Consultant: Magnolia River
About this Project
At the outset of the project, Urban GIS was tasked with updating residential water service line information, required for Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) compliance reporting. We reviewed thousands of parcels in existing GIS data and transferred critical information such as company and customer service line materials (copper, plastic, lead, galvanized, etc.), diameter size and installation dates to a centralized database. In the absence of water line geometry or attributes, we added new GIS features and values. We also modified GIS features that connect the service line system such as meter pits, curb stops, and fittings.
Later in the project, our team utilized the New Jersey American Water (NJAW) database to audit residence premise information to identify and report water service line materials. The main objective of this task was to ensure that anything containing lead was flagged for future asset management. We reviewed tap cards and related images to verify materials, derive information for editing purposes and/or report discrepancies in the records. We confirmed the presence of residential customer records in the GIS data, or lack thereof.
Our internal team contributed technical expertise to the larger team’s efforts toward realizing efficiencies in GIS data management and editing. Together, we were able to process data from numerous residential areas and communities throughout the target area.
