About this Project
In order to reduce costs, the City of Chicago coordinates street, water, and sewer improvement projects to prevent streets from being repeatedly torn open. Working with a team of engineers, Urban GIS took on the task of identifying areas where these projects overlap. Officials were also interested in learning if these multiple improvement “hot spots” were within other boundaries—such as Wards, House and Senate Districts, or Tax Increment Financing (TIF) districts, —that might provide alternative funding sources.
Our team processed data from local, state, and federal sources. We then developed a framework where a variety of datasets could be added or edited. Because of the ease of visualization, City staff can perform in-depth evaluations of various possible future improvement programs, then determine the best option for upcoming years. Coordinating projects through these evaluations ensure City departments are aware of each other’s activities so they avoid needlessly duplicating work.
By bundling construction projects, the City can save millions of dollars while reducing the disruption of the infrastructure network. Because many of these “hot spots” are within a particular TIF or Ward, these improvements can be funded without draining City coffers—thus freeing money for other capital improvements.
