Midway International Airport GIS Conversion

  • Client: Federal Aviation Administration
    Chicago Department of Aviation
  • Prime Consultant: T.Y. Lin International

About this Project

Urban GIS assisted in the final stage of converting the Airport GIS and CAD data to meet Federal Aviation GIS standards. This integration centralized airport and airspace stats into a single reference database system by providing an interface between established FAA database sets. It also
simultaneously streamlined and standardized the submittal and verification processes of the information.

The conversion of legacy airport CAD drawings and subsequent integration into the National Airport GIS involved an iterative process where both line work and key attribution data were extracted from the drawings. Points, lines, and polygons were carefully inspected and corrected using tools in CAD, GIS, and a Federal Aviation custom migration tool that enforces the Federal standard for Aviation GIS data. The converted data was incorporated into the Aviation GIS repository where it served as the primary data source for a web-based FAA GIS application. Data review tools were also developed to allow CDA and FAA staff to view the data easily

Some of the impacts of the project included:
• Providing geodetic control for engineering projects
• Assisting in airport planning and land use studies, and for other associated activities
• Certifying airports for certain types of operations
• Planning for and site navigational aids supporting the airport
