 Pavement Analysis and Research Support

Client: US Department of the Navy

About this Project

Urban GIS and our partner firms were tasked with providing engineering services and support to the US Department of the Navy, Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC), and Expeditionary Warfare Center (EXWC).

Services and support included linear segmentation, pavement condition surveys, pavement load evaluations, void detection, pavement friction, non-destructive test equipment maintenance, testing services, and research support. Additionally, our team was tasked with providing these services for airfield pavement, concrete, and high performance pavements.

Through the use of state-of-the-art equipment such as Multi-Function Vehicles, Weight Deflectometers, Surface Profilometers, and Friction Testers alongside an integrated GIS and database, our team was able to provide high-quality Pavement Condition Index (PCI), International Roughness Index (IRI), and Ride Number (RN) information and analysis in a timely, cost-effective manner.

Using such advanced technology and information systems, we provided information to key constituents in virtually real-time, while in the field, and were able to incorporate all material testing into a single authoritative repository.

Unlike typical assets, pavement management and testing is not easily inventoried as a variety of factors such as traffic, material, weathering and preventative management practices affect its condition. The pavement survey, testing, and analysis, along with the reports, exhibits, and geodatabases created will be the basis for future pavement studies for the US Department of the Navy.

The Navy and other primary stakeholders to make virtually real-time, spatially-enabled decisions on the infrastructure management practices of naval and marine base airways, roadways, and parkways.
